Boswellia sacra is a small, shrubby desert tree with silvery-white bark that grows in the arid, mountainous regions of southern Oman, particularly the Dhofar Governorate. The tree belongs to the Burseraceae family, also known as the torchwood or incense tree family.
The tree produces white, star-shaped flowers with five petals from winter through April, followed by the formation of small brown seed capsules. Its distinctive peeling bark and sparse compound leaves are perfectly adapted to survive in harsh, drought-prone environments with annual rainfall as low as 50β150mm.
In Oman, the species is found in the Dhofar mountains, east of Salalah, across approximately 3,465 kmΒ² of designated habitat. The trees thrive at elevations between 60β1,770 metres above sea level on steep, rocky slopes.
Frankincense harvesting is an ancient art practised for over 5,000 years. The process begins when skilled harvesters make careful incisions in the tree's bark using a traditional tool called a mingaf. The tree responds by secreting a milky-white oleo-gum resin that slowly hardens into "tears" as it flows down the trunk.
Trees are typically tapped 9β11 times annually, starting after they reach 2β4 kg of resin per year. The first tapping of the season produces the highest quality tears β these become the prized Hojari grade.
The tears are collected by hand, sorted by colour and quality, and then either sold as raw resin or steam-distilled to produce the precious essential oil. The entire process is
